Would...you...like...to...play...a...game?

When the time comes for you to connect to the multiplayer Quake II game that I'm hosting I'll provide you with the Internet Protocol (IP) number that you must add to your Quake 2 multiplayer settings in order to connect to my game. An IP address identifies a computer on the Internet, and look something like this:

151.203.34.135 (this is a fake IP address; I'll provide the REAL one on game day)

To connect to my game you'll have to enter the IP address for my computer to your Quake  MULTIPLAYER address book. Consult the Multiplayer section of your Quake II Manual to find out how to add an IP address to your MULTIPLAYER address book. This can be tricky...

Having problems?

Following are some extra notes in case the Multiplayer section of your Quake II Manual isn't clear enough. Simply put, you must enter the above IP address into your MULTIPLAYER address book, then "join" with my game. Here are a few tips:

START BY QUITTING ANY FIREWALL SOFTWARE (ZoneAlarm, BlackIce Defender, etc.) THAT YOU HAVE RUNNING ON YOUR COMPUTER.

THEN RUN QUAKE AGAIN, AND PRESS ESC (escape) TO ENTER THE  MULTIUSER OPTION SO THAT YOU CAN "Join Network Server" AND  FROM THERE:

1) Make sure there are NO spaces in the IP address in your address book. Also be sure that there are NO spaces before or after it -- a space before or after the address can be tricky to see,  but can cause problems.

2) When in the address book you can press the SPACE BAR to erase and address and start from scratch -- do that, then hit the DELETE key to ensure that you delete any extra spaces before entering the IP address.

3) After entering an address you must press the ESC (escape) key, and you should exit all the way out of the options screen. Then try getting into MULTIUSER options again, and choose this option:

      "Join network server"

This will look at your address book, and attempt to connect to the IP address you have in it. A few notes:

 * When you "Join network server" a message such as this will appear:

"Searching for local servers...this could take up to a  minute, so be patient..."

 * If your computer finds me when you "Join network server" you will see an entry on the screen like this:

    ----------------------------

    Connect to:

       aaronwalsh  DEMO1  1/8

    ----------------------------

Use your arrow keys to select my name, then press return.

This "gets you into" my game, and we're ready to blast...

4) If that fails, look in your address book again and confirm that the IP address I provided you is on the first line (and has no spaces in the address, or before or after it). Re-enter if  necessary (see steps above).

5) If all else fails, quit Quake, restart you computer, make sure that you're connect to the Internet, and then try to repeat these steps -- it's tricky (took me a few times to get it going, and a few restarts).

If this does not work you you might be hampered by a firewall (which can prevent you from doing such things), and won't be able to get into my game until you either quit your firewall or somehow disable it (which is probably impossible if you're doing this at work -- home users have better control over their firewall, assuming they have one in the first place).
