To host (serve) Quake 2 multiuser games yourself you must establish your computer as a host (server). In addition, you must know the Internet Protocol (IP) address for your computer, so that others can add it to their address book in order to connect to your system. Following are the basic steps you must follow: ---- ENABLE QUAKE 2 "SERVER" FOR YOUR COMPUTER ----- > see Quake MultiUser Manual for details! < ----- FIND OUT YOU IP ADDRESS ----- If you are running a modern version of Microsoft Windows (such as Windows 98, 2000, NT, etc) you can easily find out the Internet Protocol (IP) address for your computer using the "ipconfig" tool. Follow these steps: 1) Make sure your computer is connected to the Interent. 2) Run MS-DOS. Typically this is available from the Start menu but is in a slightly different location for each operating system: Windows 95/98: Start>Programs>MS-DOS Prompt Windows 2000 : Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt Windows NT : Start>Programs>Command Prompt 2) Type "ipconfig" at the DOS prompt, then press RETURN. If this tool is available on your system it will return a list of data. If not, you'll get an message such as "Bad command or file name". In this case you'll have to surf the Web for a page that can report your IP address to you! If "ipconfig" is installed on your system, and data is returned, proceed to step 3. If not, visit http://www.google.com/ and do a search for "what is my IP address". OR GO DIRECTLY TO http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/ 3) Look for the "IP ADDRESS" entry in the list of data that "ipconfig" reports -- your actual address will be a series of numbers separated by periods. Here's an example IP address: 166.257.38.192 DO NOT CONFUSE YOUR IP ADDRESS WITH THE "Subnet Mask" or "Default Gateway" addresses that you'll also see -- look only for the "IP ADDRESS" entry! ONCE YOU KNOW YOUR IP ADDRESS YOU CAN SHARE IT WITH OTHER QUAKE PLAYERS WHEN YOU HOST (SERVE) GAMES FROM YOUR COMPUTER...
