Subject: Geocities OUT OF SPACE?

Students using Yahoo Geocities may run into one (or both) of these limitations of this free service:

1) running out of total available Web "space", and so you can't upload anymore files

AND/OR

2) your large files (such as the big Flash videos) are in excess of 5MB in size and too large to upload to Yahoo Geocities at all regardless of how much Web space is actually available

When you run out of Web space in general you can free up some space on
your Geocities account by DELETING your old midterm files (WARNING:
DELETE ONLY if you have received your midterm grade by email already,
otherwise you may delete files that haven't been graded!). Assuming that
you have received your midterm grade by email your grade has been
recorded and your midterm files are no longer needed, in which case you
can delete them.

But deleting your midterm files MAY NOT free up enough space, since
Geocities puts a limit (cap) on the total amount of space you can
consume (all files). Also note that you CAN NOT upload a file that is
larger than 5MB in size...

If you can't upload a file because it's over 5MB in size you can try
shortening the size of your file (by removing some content, cutting it
short, etc.). In a worst-case scenario, you can email very large files
to me directly at Boston College:

walshag AT bc.edu
  (my BC email account)

NOTE: Depending on the email program you use 5MB may still be too big to email. A solution is to cut the music down (scale it down) or change the quality (lower) of the images you use. You can also remove some images if needed. When you save your final to a .sfw (Flash format) file it can be no more than 5MB (5,000KB) in size in order to upload to Geocities or email (in most cases 5MB is the limit for emailing). To find out how "big" your file is before you try to upload or email it you should (from the desktop, not in Flash) right click on the file and choose "Properties" from the popup menu that appears.

If you email me your final be sure to clearly label the subject of the email with
the exercise # and your name so that I know who it comes from
and what # it is. For example, the following subject would be
appropriate for Final Exercise #2 sent from Jane Doe to my walshag AT bc.edu
email account:

subject: FINAL 2 FROM JANE DOE

If it's just a matter of you running out of total Web space, however,
you can always upload your files to our class Yahoo group's file area
instead of to your personal account (although all files must be under
5MB in size). Here's how:

1) Got to our class Yahoo Group site http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MT35101/  and login as usual. In this case you won't be posting messages, however, but will instead upload files by clicking on the Files link found on the right-hand side of the page (look just below "Messages" and "Chat")

2) After clicking on Files (right hand side of page) you'll see all of the files that are currently uploaded. At the top of this
page is an option called "Add File" -- click on the "Add File" option, which lets you upload a file.

3) From the Add File screen that appears, upload your file. DO NOT CHECK ANY OF THE OPTIONS; JUST UPLOAD YOUR FILE!

Note that only 20MB of space is available; use this option only if
absolutely needed. If no more space is available for you to upload to
our group, consider EMAILING your big files to the group (or you might
want to create a brand new Yahoo account, which will give you a fresh
amount of Web space to upload -- this means you'll have your various
final exercises spread out between 2 free yahoo accounts, which is fine
as long as you provide the URL address to each exercise so that I can
grade them)

click on the "Files Help" option at the top of the "Add File" page.
